Become a Big Brother or Big Sister! Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northern BC (BBBSNBC) is currently seeking 2-3 Volunteer Group Mentors for either in-person or virtual groups.
As Group Mentors, Big Brothers and Sisters, together with another volunteer, lead a group of up to 8 Little Brothers and Sisters in fun activities either in person or online. Past groups have focused on topics such as painting class, health and wellness learning, and science experiments.
We are currently seeking friendly, energetic volunteers to help lead our interactive group programs. If you’re looking to have fun, meet new people, and help to ignite the potential of children and youth in your community, please apply!
We encourage all applicants to suggest your personal interests, hobbies, or activities you might be interested in offering to a group of young people.
2 hours per week, typically evenings or weekends, for 6-8 weeks, plus additional time for trainings, orientation, and group preparation as needed.
-Maintain regular communications with BBBSNBC Programs Team throughout the duration of the group program
-Communication may vary between in-person or Zoom meetings, phone calls, or emails
-Assist with the development of 6-8 weeks of programming
-Coordinate with team on mutually-agreed upon weekly schedule
-Help develop ideas for activities, group icebreakers, and corresponding worksheets/journals/videos to complement activities
-Host group sessions either in-person on site or virtually via Zoom platform
-Prepare and explain any housekeeping guidelines, group rules, and instructions to all participants
-Engage, support, and encourage group participants as they take part in activities
-Provide regular feedback on group development to BBBSNBC Programs Team, including participant attendance, summary of activities, concerns, etc.
-Maintain confidentiality and respect the differences and boundaries of children and other mentors and staff within the group
-Friendly and outgoing with excellent interpersonal skills
-Compassionate, respectful, and patient, particularly when working with children
-Reliability, punctuality, and the ability to maintain confidentiality
-Leadership experience and experience working with children considered an asset
-Familiarity with computers and technology may be required for virtual programs (training will be provided)
-Familiarity with basic programs and services of Big Brothers Big Sisters (training will be provided)
Successful applicants will submit a Volunteer Application Form and participate in the complete screening process including a) Police Information Check, b) Reference Check, c) Orientation and Interview, d) Relevant Training, and d) Virtual Skills Assessments and Trainings where required.
